My antivirus software (Webroot) just started alerting me to this file, which has supposedly been attempting to access the internet since I agreed to Microsoft's Windows 10 Promotion. It seems that it obviously must be related to this change (it probably runs a check on boot to see if 10 has been released yet). However, my antivirus claims it is not trusted. Running a scan turns up nothing out of the ordinary. Webroot is probably just being a little over-protective.

Living in Sweden my Asus laptop (windows 7) told me for just half an our that GWXUX stopped to work. I got the windows message with the choice to find out a solution on the internet or to just stop GWXUX.
I asked for a internet solution but then got the message The instruction at "0xXXXXXXXX" referenced memory at "0xXXXXXXXX". The memory could not be "read/written".
I never saw anything about windows 10 before I saw the windows sign to the right of my sign about hidden icons after I wrote this comment.
I have not done anmore since then. Should I restart or do other things. The system did not urge me to it. I use Avast as my antivirus program.

Same story. GWXUX says it's not working and wastes my time with message boxes. Seems to be 'privacy' related. I'll download you're fixer if nothing else works - I mean my own efforts tho I cannot find it listed in applications on board (Control Panel/Programs). Just cagey about any software. Thanks for this page.

I recently started getting the message that GWXUX has stopped working on my Windows 7 64 bit OS. I never downloaded this program, and it's not listed among my programs or downloads. It must have come in with a Windows update. I've been getting a lot of freeze-ups and other programs such as Word have stopped working smoothly. I'd like to delete it but as it's not listed in the programs or downloads, I'm not sure how. Hesitate to download more programs from the internet but may try your Freefixer.

I also starting receiving the " gwxux.exe - Application Error. The application failed to initialize properly (0xXXXXXXXX). Click OK to terminate the application" error about one week ago. About the same time I started to receive the Windows 10 free copy promotion. So far, I just close the GWXUX message box and everything seems to be ok. It is annoying and a little time consuming to respond to the message. No virus alerts from my Norton 360 antivirus program.

I am trying this now, good luck!!!

KB3035583 – Update enables additional capabilities for Windows Update notifications in Windows 8.1 and Windows 7 SP1

If you are not interested in Windows 10, you can remove this program from your PC. Go to Windows Update->Installed update, remove KB3035583. Also, you need to hide the update again in windows updates to prevent it from auto installing again since this is marked “important”.

Good question Kapil, it took me a bit of playing around to find out:

windows update/check settings/in "important updates" choose "let me choose if whether to download or install....." click OK

then check if you have any "Important updates is available"
click on it, if you find the number again right click and 'hide update" Good luck!!

I looked it up at the internet, and it seems to be connected to the later Windows 10.
But I think you are all making it too complicated how to get rid of it.
I just went to "Add/Remove Programs" and looked for Windows updates. KB3035583 is the one to look for. Clicking on it allowed me to remove it, so I did.
Now I have no icon showing I should upgrade to Windows 10. - I can always do that later at the official update page of Microsoft.

You can get rid of it, just uninstall it by deleting the file KB3035583 from the updates, then hide it so it won't install it again. It is under windows updates - installed updates. Just remember if you received this update offer in an email, it could be ransomeware as Microsoft doesn't offer anything by email. If it is a file on your PC from recent updates just uninstall as I mentioned above.

Thank you for posting this problem. I got rid of the update, but previously had removed the programme from my add/remove list. That didn't get rid of it, just gave me an error message. That got me searching and found your site. So I removed the update and the icon disappeared.

BIG BONUS. I have W7, and it was going slower and slower. I thought it was Google Chrome causing it and stripped that down. That did not make much difference. Firefox and IE were both still slow.

Now my machine performs normally again, the sluggishness is gone. Did the GWXUX.exe also create other issues to get you to change to W10? I hate conspiracy theories, but the change is just much to great to be a coincidence to me.
