My granddaughter's screen is black after logging in. I opened the task master looking for something odd and not knowing what Run once Wrapper was, I ended the process. However, upon restart, the screen goes black again until Run once wrapper is ended. I found the post above dated 1/25/2015 which appears to be having the same issue.

Last night I downloaded FileZilla client from filezilla-project.org (sourceforge) and deselected all options for browser add-ons. This morning upon booting up and logging into any user's directory, I get nothing but a completely black screen and an active mouse plus a Pro-Scan window/GUI (at least I think that was its name). Ctrl-alt-del got me into the task manager, where I was able to restore user profiles but ending runonce.exe. I uninstalled FileZilla and Pro-Scan and then rebooted. I still get nothing but a blank screen whenever I try to log into any user directory. Next I tried to delete runonce.exe since this is the process that is causing my problem. Permission denied. No uninstall option.

I can achieve full functionality if I end runonce every time I log in, but clearly something is suddenly and desperately wrong.

What should I do?

Many thanks in advance.

Hello,

Sorry to hear you are having that black screen problem with runonce.exe:

Unfortunately I don't know what is causing the problem. I've been trying to get the same problem by downloading various software bundles, but without success.

Anyway, I don't know if this will work, but hopefully you can find more information about why RunOnce.exe hangs:

1. Install Process Explorer from Microsoft: https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx
2. Reboot your machine.
3. Bring up the Windows Task Manager by pressing Ctrl+Shift+Esc.
4. Don't kill the RunOnce.exe process. Instead, use the Task Manager to start Process Explorer.
5. Examine the RunOnce.exe process. What command line was used to start RunOnce.exe? What DLLs do you see loaded into RunOnce.exe?
6. Did you see some reference to some file that looked suspicious? Please upload them to www.virustotal.com to check them for malware.

Did that give you some more clues about what is going on with run once.exe?

@Peter: Thanks for letting me know about the "FileZilla" download. The file was detected by a few of the anti-virus programs and digitally signed by a publisher called "Max Source" located in Israel. I've posted some more information about that in the blog:

The "runonce" scenario happened to our desk top last night. I spent all day today trying to get rid of the thing and I think I finally got it. I am not computer savy at all but I am persistent. I have Century Link internet with Norton anti-virus. A quick scan did not get rid of the problem however if look at the norton site there is a function called "power eraser". I used this and was able to remove the "runonce" problem.

This problem happened to my son's machine right after downloading NERO. After much research I did find that the runonce wrapper was the issue. I tried deleting it to no avail so what I ended up doing was using AVG shredder and shredded the runonce wrapper file. His desktop now shows on reboot. I do not believe NERO is the ONLY program that may be downloading this file; based on my research. So far, removing the file has not caused any other issues with his computer. He is running Windows 8 32 bit.

I have had the same problem since downloading Java of all things! It is so frustrating. I have tried a restore and that fails telling me I have a corrupt file on my c: drive. This is driving my crazy! especially when I am trying to complete a midterm paper!!!At least I had found the same temporary fix as everyone else (ending the run once on task manager). I will try Process Explorer and se if that works.

Hey guys I had the exact same problem I tried to delete runonce.exe but I was denied by Trust Installer but good news I got rid of it. I searched the internet on how to delete files that are protected by trust installer and it showed me a step by step guide see the link here http://helpdeskgeek.com/windows-7/windows-7-how-to-delete-files-protected-by-trustedinstaller/
I restarted my laptop and everything is going great no more black screens and task manager. Hope this helps everyone out I was slowly losing my mind everytime I started my laptop.

Please note that runonce.exe should NOT be deleted. It is a Windows file that comes preinstalled with the operation system. It is needed by some installers to work correctly.

The issue is not runonce.exe, but the program that runonce.exe is currently executing.

Hopefully you can use Microsoft's Process Explorer to track down the root cause, as I described in the comment above.
