iastor.sys should definitely be left alone!
iastor.sys is Intel SATA RAID Controller.
Windows XP cannot even see your hard drive without iastor.sys if you have a SATA/RAID hard drive. Maybe other types of hard drives also, I do not know anything about that, I have a SATA/RAID hard drive. Windows XP cannot even be installed without having iastor.sys on an F6 floppy disk or slipstreamed onto the XP CD if you have a SATA/RAID hard drive. XP will not see the hard drive and the install will error out.
I discovered all of this the hard way by blowing Windows Vista away on a new machine and had to jump through hoops to get Windows XP installed.

iastor.sys is known to cause BSoD (Blue Screen of Death) in some Operating Systems, like Windows 7, when trying to mount virtual CD drives, using tools like EmuCD, Daemon Tools and so on.
