For the past 5 or more days, I have been getting a small pop up window that says "tsassist.exe abnormal program termination". When I click on the [X] or close and it goes away, but comes back hours later. Doen't seem to be a problem, but it is annoying.

Me too. I downloaded a Trojan Horse virus, I quickly used anivirus software to remove it. However, my favorites list has dissappeared (but still in it's correct file location) and I'm getting this TSAssist window popping up. It seems to happen any time my computer goes into sleep mode or a new user signs in.

this is totally not helpful. there is no such file on this computer as unknown file assistant and tsassist.exe is a hoax and part of the virus I have contracted. there is no point in wasting your time viewing this information

@Tollie: Are you also getting the "TSAssist.exe "abnormal program termination"?

There should be and entry called "File Type Assistant" under the Add/Remove Programs option in the Windows Control Panel if you want to uninstall it.

Okay, read lots of sites and yours is the first to give some info that looks valid.

I looked at Tsassist.exe and it's been on my system for about 2 years. It looks like it part of the Avast software system.

What's interesting is that another software package (malware) has found a hole in it. I keep getting a pop-up that's using it to make Avast think Skype needs an and upgrade that I already have. The package is 10 times larger than the real Skype.

Deleting Tsassist isn't the answer. It's a bug that I'm reporting to Avast (which I did earlier about the larger Skype download and no answer from them yet).

Maybe now with this info I'll get a better response from them.

I have tsassist.exe on my system, but I can't find it. A search finds nothing - HP Pavillion Win 7 (desktop) - it keeps producing same erroneous updates and no virus checker has found problem.

@Joe: I think you can uninstall TsAssist from the add/remove programs dialog in the Windows Control Panel. If that does not work, or if TsAssist does not appear in the list, FreeFixer can remove tsassist.exe for you.
