The task manager does not directly show it using memory, but when the service is running ~76% of my RAM is consumed when I am doing nothing else, but when the service is off, the ram usage drops to ~37%.

@Saheb: Ouch.. I found the following blog post where a guy found a bug in a Western Digital device driver:

It might be related to the problem you ran into. Western Digital has released a fix for that bug.
