The morning of march 30 spybot search and destroy gave the following popup:
registry startup value added xp_eos.exe /t
with the option [allow] [deny] [] remember this decision
i denied the change
it was indeed march 31 not April fools day
also not April 10 like the god of Redmond said
perhaps i will erase the file in a few months and see if it
comes back signifying that ms still updates and supports
the last survey i saw of web connected computers win xp was 52% of windows (does ms really want to drop 1/2 their costumer base)
win 8.2 and vista tied at 1% win 7 about 40%
the last support for windows i received was when windows search installed and search companion was removed
this made me so happy i removed windows search from the win 7 machine and installed search companion(also all the xp machines)
scores
spybot search and destroy - detected and blocked
malwarebytes - no opinion
superantispyware - no opinion
spybot really goes after startup entries
the others seem to remove stuff far better

here is my source ... 7 is NOW more than xp
by about 20 percent
nt > 2000 !!!
windows server 2003 is the only thing from redmond that works with quad opterons perhaps even quad xeons
when I looked at it they had win 8.0 win 8.1 and win 8.2
with their own pie slice and i totaled up only windows
was a lot of talk about windows xp being cut
windows xp has gone UP in the last month
win 8.2 bombed badly so probably below .01% not as popular as win 98
gotta pay for hourly/daily so choose [timeframe] weeks or months
go back 6 months (little arrow above the pie chart and monthly)
if i counted correctly this is sep 2013:
